Surround SCM Files Retrieved to Encrypted Folders Are Not Encrypted

Article ID: 724  |  Last updated: 22 Dec, 2014

After getting files from Surround SCM to an encrypted Windows folder, the local files are not encrypted.

Surround SCM retrieves files to a temporary directory before transferring them to the specified local directory. If the local and temporary directories are on the same drive, the files are renamed to use the specified directory path. Files are only automatically encrypted when they are copied or moved to an encrypted folder on a different drive, not when they are renamed on the same drive.

Encrypt the temporary directory to encrypt the files before they are renamed to the use the specified directory path.

  1. Enter set TEMP from a command prompt to locate the temporary directory.
  2. Right-click the temporary directory and choose Properties. The Temp Properties dialog box opens.
  3. Click Advanced. The Advanced Attributes dialog box opens.
  4. Select Encrypt contents to secure data.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK in the Temp Properties dialog box to save the changes.

Alternatively, you can set the destination directory on a different drive than the temporary directory, which forces Windows to copy the files to the directory instead of renaming them. For example, if the temporary directory is on C:\, use an encrypted folder on Z:\ as the destination directory.
