Helix ALM Visual Studio Integration

Article ID: 551  |  Last updated: 02 May, 2017

Helix ALM supports integration with Visual Studio. See Third-Party Integrations for supported versions.

This article includes information about installing the integration package, accessing Helix ALM items and actions, configuring integration options, associating solutions with projects, and troubleshooting.

Installing the integration package

During Helix ALM installation, you are prompted to install the Visual Studio integration package if Visual Studio is installed. If you did not install the integration package, rerun the installer and select the Install Visual Studio Integration option.

Tip: If you use Visual Studio 2012 or later, you can also manually run the Visual Studio Package extension installer (TTVSPackage.vsix) in the addins\TestTrack Visual Studio Package directory in the Helix ALM application directory. This is a quick way to install the integration package if you reinstalled or upgraded Visual Studio without running the Helix ALM installation again.

Accessing Helix ALM items and actions

The Helix ALM menu is added to Visual Studio after the integration package is installed. You can also right-click the toolbar area and choose Helix ALM to enable the toolbar. The integration provides access to the following actions and list windows.

Option Use to:
Connect Connect to the Helix ALM Server.
Disconnect Disconnect from the Helix ALM Server.
Issues List Open the Issues list window.
Add Issue Add an issue.
Workbook Open the Workbook list window, which includes your assigned items and any tasks added to the workbook.
Add Task Add a workbook task.
Options Specify the Helix ALM project to log in to when a solution is opened and the default login options.

Configuring integration options

You can set Helix ALM options in Visual Studio .NET. Each solution can be associated with a single Helix ALM project. Multiple workspaces can also be associated with one project. The project does not have a direct link to a solution.

Setting open options

You can specify if Visual Studio should connect to a Helix ALM project when you open a solution.

  1. Choose Helix ALM > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. On the Open tab, select an option to indicate how Visual Studio connects to Helix ALM when a solution opens.
  3. Click OK to save the changes.

Setting login options

You can enter your Helix ALM login information to connect to a specific project by default.

  1. Choose Helix ALM > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. In the Default Helix ALM Login area, click Edit. The Default Helix ALM Login Information dialog box opens.
  4. Select a Server or click Configure to add a server.
  5. Enter your Username and Password or select ‘Use single sign-on’ to log in with your network credentials.
  6. Click Connect.
  7. Select a Project and click OK. The Default Helix ALM Login area displays the information you entered.
  8. Click OK to save the changes.

Associating solutions with projects

You can associate specific solutions with Helix ALM projects.

  1. Choose Helix ALM > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. In the Associated Helix ALM logins area, click Add. The Associate Solution with Helix ALM Login dialog box opens.
  4. Select a Server, enter the login credentials, and click Connect.
  5. Select a Project.
  6. Click Use Current or click the Browse button to select the solution you want to associate with the project.
  7. Select ‘Save full pathname’ to associate each solution with a specific project. For example, if you have two workspace files with the same filename, selecting this option lets you associate each workspace with a different project.
  8. Click OK. The Associated Helix ALM Logins area displays the information you entered.
  9. Click OK to save the changes.

Troubleshooting

The Helix ALM toolbar includes duplicate buttons

If you manually installed the Visual Studio Integration Package extension after reinstalling or upgrading Visual Studio 2012 or later, an earlier version of the Visual Studio add-in may be enabled in addition to the newer extension. The toolbar includes options from the add-in and the extension.

Disable the add-in from the earlier installation to update the toolbar.

  1. Choose Tools > Add-in Manager.
  2. Clear the Startup option for the earlier add-in version and click OK.
  3. Restart Visual Studio.
