TestTrack Visual Studio Integration

Article ID: 551  |  Last updated: 03 Sep, 2015

TestTrack supports integration with Visual Studio. See TestTrack Integrations for supported versions.

This article includes information about installing the integration package, accessing TestTrack items and actions, configuring integration options, associating solutions with projects, and troubleshooting.

Note: The following information applies to TestTrack 2015.1.1 and Visual Studio 2015. If you use a different TestTrack or Visual Studio version, the steps to configure and use the integration should be similar.

Installing the integration package

During TestTrack installation, you are prompted to install the Visual Studio integration package if Visual Studio is installed. If you did not install the integration package, rerun the TestTrack installer and select the Install Visual Studio Integration option.

Tip: If you use Visual Studio 2012 or later, you can also manually run the TestTrack Visual Studio Package extension installer (TTVSPackage.vsix) in the addins\TestTrack Visual Studio Package directory in the TestTrack application directory. This is a quick way to install the integration package if you reinstalled or upgraded Visual Studio without running the TestTrack installation again.

Accessing TestTrack items and actions

The TestTrack menu is added to Visual Studio after the integration package is installed. You can also right-click the toolbar area and choose TestTrack to enable the TestTrack toolbar. The integration provides access to the following TestTrack actions and list windows.

Option Use to:
Connect Connect to the TestTrack Server.
Disconnect Disconnect from the TestTrack Server.
Issues List Open the Issues list window.
Add Issue Add an issue.
Workbook Open the Workbook list window, which includes your assigned items and any tasks added to the workbook.
Add Task Add a workbook task.
Options Specify the TestTrack project to log in to when a solution is opened and the default login options.
About View TestTrack version information.

Note: The TestTrack menu is not added to Visual Studio 2005 - 2010. You must use the TestTrack toolbar in these Visual Studio versions.

Connecting to a TestTrack project

  1. Choose TestTrack > Connect. The TestTrack Login dialog box opens.
  2. Select the Server to connect to.
  3. Enter your Username and Password or select ‘Use single sign-on’ to log in with your network credentials.
  4. Select ‘Always login with this username and password’ to automatically log in with the credentials you entered.
  5. Click Connect. The TestTrack Project Selection dialog box opens.
  6. Select a Project and click OK.

Configuring integration options

You can set TestTrack options in Visual Studio .NET. Each solution can be associated with a single TestTrack project. Multiple workspaces can also be associated with one project. The TestTrack project does not have a direct link to a solution.

Setting open options

You can specify if Visual Studio should connect to a TestTrack project when you open a solution.

  1. Choose TestTrack > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. On the Open tab, select an option to indicate how Visual Studio connects to TestTrack when a solution opens.
  3. Click OK to save the changes.

Setting login options

You can enter your TestTrack login information to connect to a specific project by default.

  1. Choose TestTrack > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. In the Default TestTrack Login area, click Edit. The Default TestTrack Login Information dialog box opens.
  4. Select a Server or click Configure to add a server.
  5. Enter your Username and Password or select ‘Use single sign-on’ to log in with your network credentials.
  6. Click Connect.
  7. Select a Project and click OK. The Default TestTrack Login area displays the information you entered.
  8. Click OK to save the changes.

Associating solutions with TestTrack projects

You can associate specific solutions with TestTrack projects.

  1. Choose TestTrack > Options. The Visual Studio .NET Add-in Options dialog box opens.
  2. Click the Login tab.
  3. In the Associated TestTrack logins area, click Add. The Associate Solution with TestTrack Login dialog box opens.
  4. Select a Server, enter the login credentials, and click Connect.
  5. Select a Project.
  6. Click Use Current or click the Browse button to select the solution you want to associate with the project.
  7. Select ‘Save full pathname’ to associate each solution with a specific project. For example, if you have two workspace files with the same filename, selecting this option lets you associate each workspace with a different project.
  8. Click OK. The Associated TestTrack Logins area displays the information you entered.
  9. Click OK to save the changes.

Troubleshooting

The TestTrack toolbar includes duplicate buttons

If you manually installed the Visual Studio Integration Package extension after reinstalling or upgrading Visual Studio 2012 or later, an earlier version of the Visual Studio add-in may be enabled in addition to the newer extension. The toolbar includes options from the add-in and the extension.

Disable the add-in from the earlier installation to update the toolbar.

  1. Choose Tools > Add-in Manager.
  2. Clear the Startup option for the TestTrack add-in and click OK.
  3. Restart Visual Studio.
