Seapine Software Donates Generator to Help Honduran Hospital
Cincinnati—September 17, 2013—Seapine Software, a leading provider of process-centric product development solutions, is donating a backup generator to the Central American Medical Outreach (CAMO) to provide electricity for a large public health clinic in Santa Rosa de Copan, Honduras.
The Centro de Salud Vicente Fernandez Mejia is one of the largest public health clinics in Honduras, serving patients who are in extreme poverty. It sees an average of 180 adults and children per day, or about 43,000 patient visits per year. Electrical service in Santa Rosa de Copan is unreliable, however, and weekly outages put patients at serious risk.
As part of an 18-month project to modernize the clinic, CAMO had installed wiring in the hospital with the expectation of receiving a backup generator. When funding for the generator fell through, CAMO began searching for an alternative.
The donated generator is a 480v Kohler 80KVA unit that served as a backup power source at Seapine’s previous office location. When the company built its current headquarters in 2012, a more powerful generator was purchased, and the search began for a new home for the Kohler unit.
Matt Disher, Seapine Software’s CIO, became aware of CAMO’s need during a discussion with Vic Spang and Mark Cronin at Buckeye Power Sales, the company that maintains Seapine’s backup generator. They put Disher in touch with Kathy Tschiegg, CAMO’s founder.
“It was fate,” Disher said. “We had a generator that was almost like new, and they had a hospital that needed a generator. We’re excited about the positive impact this generator will have in Santa Rosa de Copan.”
The donation of Seapine’s generator means that patients at the Centro de Salud Vicente Fernandez Mejia won’t be put at risk and the clinic will be able to remain open during power outages, Tschiegg said.
About Central American Medical Outreach
CAMO was launched in 1993 by Kathy Tschiegg, a former Peace Corps nurse who saw too many Honduran infants and children die due to a lack of medical equipment and technology. Today, CAMO is one of the most recognized non-profit health care organizations in the region. It serves around 100,000 people annually with services ranging from breast exams and prosthetics to neo-natal care and eye surgery.
